5 Eco-Friendly Earphones
I'm not sure why, but Nathan is constantly breaking his earphones. I imagine it's a combination of poor quality and everyday use, but I can't say for certain. Anyway, he is again in need of a pair and since I'm making more ethical choices in my life, I decided to research eco-friendly earphones for him. And, of course, I'll also share that information with you! While there are not a ton of options, the ones available make for excellent choices. Here's what I found:
The company: In addition to handcrafting with reclaimed wood, LSTN has made it their mission to fund hearing restoration and spread awareness for the global problem of hearing loss and hearing impairment. For every pair of headphones sold, LSTN helps restore hearing to a person in need through the Starkey Hearing Foundation. Awesome, right?
My favorite: The Beech Wood Bowerys are made of reclaimed beech wood housing with a microphone for calls and voice recording, passive noise isolation, a durable nylon wrapped cable, and a one year warranty. You can see all LSTN products here.
The company: A favorite of stereophiles, thinksound handcrafts their headphones using sustainable wood sources and PVC-free cables. They are working on getting FSC certified.
My favorite: The ms01 has an ultra-lightweight design, reduced speaker diameter for better ergonomics, and passive noise cancellation. Each pair comes with a cotton carrying pouch, Active Lifestyle Ear Hooks, four sets of ear fittings, and a one year warranty.
The company: The House of Marley products are sustainably crafted from earth-friendly materials including their exclusive REWIND™ fabric, cotton and canvas textiles, recycled plastics, recyclable metals, bamboo, and Forest Stewardship Council-certified woods. All products support 1Love, the Marley family charitable organization committed to projects that promote peace, unity, and love around the world. One love. One heart.
My favorite: The Smile Jamaica In-Ear Headphones are the cheapest option of the bunch at $19.99. But even at this price point, they are built with FSC certified wood and recyclable aluminum, and are shipped in recycled packaging. The House of Marley electronics come with a two year limited liability warranty.
The company: A product of Kickstarter, Jamboo strives to produce fashionable, long lasting, and inexpensive headphones made of sustainable bamboo. In addition, they use eco-friendly glues and oxygen-free copper.
My favorite: The Night Sky earphones are made with bamboo on the earpieces, middle connector, and headphone jack. The unique cord is woven with cotton thread and made to be tangle-free (a big plus in my book). I like the black and white combo, but there are many colors to choose from.
The company: Based in Los Angeles, California, Organic Affinity is dedicated to creating the highest quality earth-friendly products. Organic Affinity donates a portion of each purchase to local and global efforts to keep the world and its inhabitants healthy and safe for generations to come.
My favorite: The GrooveMagnet Premium Sustainable Earbud Headphones are handcrafted using sustainable bamboo, and made with the finest biodegradable plant-based bioplastics. They carry a one year manufacturer's warranty on defects of materials and workmanship.
Among these and the other options available from these brands, I think any price point, style, or sound quality could be sustainably satisfied. I hope that the next time you need earphones or headphones for your commute, workout, or dance party for one, you will consider these eco-friendly options.
