Oatmeal: Good for Your Whole Body!
It's no secret that oatmeal is good for you. Oatmeal has sustained animals and people for centuries, but in the last few decades we have finally come to understand the many benefits of this hearty cereal. Its various properties make it beneficial for us inside and out. When eaten as part of a healthy diet, oats can help lower cholesterol and ward off heart disease. The soluble fiber also helps keep your blood sugar stable and makes you full longer, hence its position as a breakfast staple. Oatmeal can also remedy multiple skin afflictions. I have found it to be very soothing for my sensitive skin and wanted to share its benefits and some DIYs and truly clean products (please don't be fooled by Aveeno).
Cooked oatmeal treats acne by relieving irritation, absorbing excess oil and bacteria, and gently exfoliating. Oats contain natural cleansers called saponins that remove dirt and oil without causing irritation.
Boil one part oatmeal to two parts water until it softens. Let it cool for at least 15 minutes. It's going to be thick, so slap it on as best you can. Rinse with cool water after 10-15 minutes. Keep leftovers in the refrigerator or just eat it!
Prepare a natural toner by soaking oats in water overnight. Blend the soaked mixture and then strain in a nut bag or sieve. Store in the refrigerator and apply with a reuseable cotton pad. This mixture will soften, tone, and cleanse your skin. You could also drink it!
I bought Yum Organics Oatmeal Facial Wash and find it to be gently exfoliating, yet soothing to redness. Sometimes I'll leave it on to dry as a mask and then rinse off with cool water. This one and the one from She Essential Beauty both contain oatmeal, lavender, and other good ingredients without any of the bad stuff.
Problem: Dry Skin & Itchiness
Oats have anti-inflammatory properties and are suitable for all skin types. The polysaccharides in oatmeal are effective in treating dry skin symptoms like itching, rashes, and flaky skin. Polysaccharides are what make the oats become gelatinous in liquid and it is this property that forms a protective film on skin to ease dryness.
Make a facial mask by mixing a cup of ground oatmeal with enough banana, avocado, milk, or yogurt to make a paste. Stir until smooth, apply it all over your face, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with cold water.
A simple colloidal (finely ground) oatmeal bath is effective in healing a number of skin afflictions like sunburn, poison ivy, chicken pox, and eczema. Colloidal oatmeal can also be made into a paste and applied directly to the affected area.
