Cards are a major source of waste during the holidays. The sentiment is nice, but most people don't keep or upcycle their cards, so at the very best they are recycled after the holidays. Simply put, it's just an unnecessary use of paper, particularly if they are made from new trees.
If you want to send or give paper cards, consider handmaking them from scrap paper and materials. If you buy, make sure they are made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper. My favorite way to spread holiday cheer is by sending e-cards. I recommend Paperless Post for fun and festive designs and a zero waste holiday.
