NYC Sustainable Design Tour

NYC Sustainable Design Tour |

Last weekend I attended the inaugural outing of the NYC Sustainable Design Talk & Tour. Created by the Ethical Fashion Academy, the three hour tour promotes an in-depth analysis of emerging sustainable fashion trends in apparel, home, and lifestyle products. The tour is led by Carmen Artigas, a sustainable designer, consultant, and speaker with over 20 years of experience in the industry. She is passionate about educating designers and consumers who are interested in a more sustainable lifestyle. In 2011, she developed the sustainable design curricula now used at The New School, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Pratt Institute. Now, she and co-founder Francisca Pineda are putting their expertise to work on this monthly tour through the luxury district of SoHo.

I felt like this tour was an extension of last month's Fashion Revolution Day—especially the "Be Curious" initiative. Carmen instructed us on how to question the salespeople about their brand and how to inspect tags for clues about the sustainability of the item. This information will help attendees to continue questioning brands and purchases, which helps keep the conversation surrounding conscious consumerism alive.

If you're interested in learning more about how to identify sustainable brands or want access to two lovely sustainable design experts, you can purchase a ticket to the next tour here. I'll warn you that the groups are kept very small and tickets sell out quickly! Even if you aren't in NYC to take the tour, you can follow the Ethical Fashion Academy blog or catch up with them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
