Sustainable Wood Watches by JORD
As I come to better understand sustainability, I find myself drawn to more natural materials. Wool, linen, cotton, and wood have natural warmth and I take joy in wearing them against my skin.
A brand called JORD is creating sleek wood watches with sustainability, natural elements, and modern design in mind. JORD is a collective of artists, designers, and seasoned watchsmiths. The designers are based in St. Louis while the manufacturing happens in a self-managed facility in China. By managing their own facility, they can ensure the people working on their watches are trained adequately, treated fairly, and paid appropriately.
JORD watches use only 100% natural wood that is sustainably sourced. Some of their current watches feature woods like bamboo, maple, koa, blackwood, cherry, sandalwood, and zebrawood. A great majority of the wood they use comes from furniture remnants. From the remnants, a team hand chooses pieces based on the grain, the coloring, and the density of the wood so that the finished piece looks uniform.
Sustainably sourced wood is the star of JORD watches. Thanks to the uniqueness of the pieces and grains, you get a one of a kind timepiece that will last for many years if properly cared for. JORD treats the wood with natural substances rather than toxic chemicals to safeguard both the environment and their workers. Even the care instructions for wood watches are natural:
For best cleaning results, mix two tablespoons each of olive oil and lemon juice. Apply a small amount to a soft cotton cloth. Wring the cloth to spread the mixture further into the material and apply to the wood using brisk strokes (this helps distribute the oil evenly). To maintain the original appearance of the wood, apply a natural coating such as beeswax, butcher block oil, or walnut oil.
I'm wearing the Maple & Silver Cora Series. It's simplicity and neutral tone make it a natural addition to my minimalist wardrobe. It goes with everything and I love that it has an automatic movement and doesn't require a battery. The craftsmanship of this watch is evident and I know I will wear it for years to come.
Disclosure: JORD sent me the Cora watch for free to try out. I only review products I believe in, that I would use myself, or think might be of interest to you.
